Liveness Results

This article will aims to help you understand results you may see for Liveness checks.

Liveness Checks

At Credas, we use two forms of Liveness detection to verify if the individual is live and present when completing the check. These are:

  • Passive Liveness - This type of Liveness detection requires no instruction, command or response from the individual - thus giving them no indication as to what security mechanism is being used to try and circumvent the security. The individual will have to take  a passport style picture and our passive Liveness then uses AI to determine whether the image taken is genuine or not using deep neural networks.
  • Active Liveness - If we have been unable to verify the individual is live and present using Passive Liveness, we will then ask to complete an action/pose, such as putting their hand on their head or finger to the nose. You may also see this pose being referred to as an Unique Action Protocol (UAP) on the system. If you have our Credas+ remediation, our trained back office team will then review the Active Liveness to confirm if the individual is completing the pose, and they are live and present when completing it. If you do not have Credas+, this action will be presented to you for manual review.

Liveness Results

Once the Liveness has been completed by an individual, you will see one of three results appear:

ResultWhat this means

PASS (Green)

This means that we have been able to confirm the individual is live and present when completing their check via either passive Liveness or the individual completed the pose (UAP) they were asked to do and we could confirm they were live and present. The latter is only available as part of Credas+.

PENDING (Orange)

This means we have not been able to confirm the individual is live and present when completing their check. We have asked the individual to complete a pose (UAP), and this will need manual reviewing by yourselves. You will need to manually review this pose and confirm if you believe the individual is matching the pose in question, and is live and present when completing it. If you are unsure how to remediate the Liveness or you do not have the permission to do so, we recommend speaking to your compliance officer or manager who will be able to advise regarding your organisations internal policies.
FAIL (Red) You will see the Liveness result appear as a fail if you have our Credas+ remediation service, or you are using a Right to Work/Rent journey. A fail result indicates that we have been unable to confirm the individual is live and present via passive Liveness and the individual has not completed the pose (UAP) they were requested to do.

Reasons an Individual may not pass Liveness

An individual might not pass the Liveness check for a number of reasons, however you can see examples below:

  • The picture is of someone on a computer screen, so they are therefore not live and present;
  • They have taken the selfie in a dark room limiting visibility;
  • They did not complete the action correctly they were asked to do (as part of Credas+).

If an individual needs advise on how to take the best picture of Liveness, they can read our guide for them here.

What to do if the Liveness fails or refers?

If a Liveness check refers and you do not have Credas+, you will need to manually review the action/UAP the individual has completed - and confirm if they are live and present when completing the check. To remediate the referred Liveness, click into the orange Liveness result, and you will be able to see the original selfie that we were unable to verify using passive Liveness, and the pose they were asked to do. You can then update the status to a pass/fail, and add a comment. This comment will appear within the notes tab of the portal and also on the PDF so there is an audit trial you can refer back too.

If you do not have permissions to remediate the Liveness, or you are unsure if you can pass the Liveness, please speak to your MLRO/Compliance Officer/Manager.

If the Liveness fails, it is down to your organisations internal policies on what your next steps. If you are unsure on what to do next, please speak to your manager, MLRO or compliance officer.

If you wish for the individual to have another attempt at completing their liveness check, you can resubmit the check to them here or send them a new 'Identity' only journey here.
